Dear Townsville: Who Is Eligible for the No Cost Solar Program in QLD?
Who can get no cost solar in Queensland?
There is no broad Queensland program that gives every eligible Townsville homeowner a complete rooftop solar system at no cost.
The federal Solar Sharer Offer gives some households three hours of free electricity each day, but it only covers South East Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia.
Townsville is in regional Queensland, so Townsville households are not eligible for that offer at this time.
Townsville property owners may still qualify for other support.
This can include the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme discount or a battery discount for an eligible system, or the Queensland Supercharged Solar for Renters rebate for an eligible rental property.

These programs can cut the price. They do not always make the whole project free.
That difference matters. A search ad may use words like “free solar,” “government solar,” or “no upfront cost.” Those phrases can describe three very different things: a real rebate, a finance deal, or a power plan with a free-use window. Before you sign, ask one simple question:
What program is this, who is eligible, and what do I still have to pay?
If you are comparing solar Townsville options, do not stop at the headline price.
Ask whether the quote includes approved solar panels Townsville homeowners can use under the current rules.
Then check how solar power Townsville works with your roof, daytime energy use, battery plans and final installed price.

It does not make the daily supply charge or power used outside that window free. It also does not place panels on your roof. Read the official Solar Sharer Offer rules before changing plans.
Townsville warning: A salesperson may say “Queensland homes are eligible” without saying the offer is limited to South East Queensland. Ask for the exact program name, the government page, the eligibility clause and the full customer price in writing.

Who is eligible for the Queensland rental solar rebate?
The Supercharged Solar for Renters program is the main current Queensland panel rebate that may apply to a Townsville rental. The landlord must live in Australia, own the rented home as an individual, not live in that property, and have the tenant’s consent.
Body corporate consent may also be needed. Check the covenants and body corporate by-laws for solar infrastructure.
The property must be in Queensland. It must generally be a Class 1a home such as a house, duplex or townhouse, or a qualifying secondary dwelling.
It must have its own meter, have an eligible lease, and rent for no more than $1,000 per week. A property with an existing solar system is not eligible under the current rules, even when that system is not working, unless the broken system is removed and all other rules are met.
The new system must also meet product and installation rules.
It must be at least 3kW, use approved panels and an approved inverter, include a generation signalling device, and be designed and installed by people with the required accreditation and Queensland electrical licences.
Check the Queensland rental solar eligibility requirements before paying a deposit.
What Townsville homeowners can claim
Most owner-occupiers looking for solar panels Townsville QLD will focus on the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme. An eligible installation can create Small-scale Technology Certificates, known as STCs.
In many quotes, the customer assigns the STCs to a registered agent.
The value then appears as a discount in the quote.
This is not a cash gift with no rules.
The system must qualify.
The products, installer, installation date, system size and certificate claim all matter. Ask the seller to show:
- The full price before STCs.
- The STC count and dollar value.
- The final price after the discount.
- The exact panel and inverter model numbers.
- The installer’s accreditation and electrical licence details.
- Any switchboard, roof, travel or grid connection costs.
The Clean Energy Regulator says eligible small-scale systems can earn STCs based on expected generation, storage or displacement. Most system owners assign the right to create and sell the certificates in return for a discount.

How Much Can Solar Cost in Townsville?
A 6.6kW system may sit around $5,200 to $8,500 after the federal incentive for many standard residential jobs. A 10kW system often costs more. Your quote can move due to the roof, switchboard, equipment, access, mounting, grid work and warranty support.
This guide applies to Townsville and nearby areas like Kirwan, Annandale, Burdell, Mount Louisa, Bushland Beach, Deeragun, Douglas, and Idalia.
These prices are guides, not promises. A low quote can leave out switchboard work, safe roof access, cyclone-rated mounting or local warranty labour. A clear quote tells you what is included before work starts.
